Another Delay for The Hobbit?

The return to Middle-Earth may be taking a while longer than expected. TheOneRing.net has recently posted the story that MGM's financial woes may cause delays in the start of the production of The Hobbit movies.

Apparently, the studio is $3.7 billion in debt. MGM holds the distribution rights to The Hobbit whereas Warner Brothers is the studio making the movie. The two studios have an agreement to produce and distribute The Hobbit but MGM's debt and the fact that it may be sold could put a wrench in the start of the production.

The OneRing's source said that:

At this stage we are all working and hoping for the best case scenario. Without a doubt, the MGM situation carries great importance.

There is even confusion as to the movie's release date which could either be in 2011 or in 2012. 2012 seems to be the most logical one.

Just recently, Sir Ian McKellen had declared that the movie would start shooting in July of this year in New Zealand.

Matt Smith Talks About His Doctor

Over at Wales Online, there is an article where Matt Smith talks about his Doctor and what his version of the Time Lord is like:

I think my Doctor’s a bit more reckless. He’s a thrill seeker, addicted to time travel. He is the mad buffoon genius who saves the world because he’s got a great heart, spirit and soul, but he doesn’t suffer fools. I hope these things come across, but I think I’ve also injected a bit of my own personality into the role.

Smith also talks about the pressures of inheriting the role of a lifetime - he's the youngest actor ever to play the Doctor - and he says:

These things are as intimidating as you allow them to be. The more you do something the less daunting and intimidating it is. Plus, I couldn’t have inherited the role from a nicer man.

That nice man is the former Tenth Doctor himself - the most popular Time Lord ever - played by beloved Scottish actor David Tennant, who's Doctor regenerated at the end of the very emotional two-parter: The End of Time which aired last New Year's day.

Yes, Matt Smith does have big shoes to fill. However, from what I've seen and heard, I'm very confident he will manage it well.

Official Pics of the Brand New Tardis Interior!! Doctor Who

Just looking at these beautiful pictures, my eyes water at the incredible beauty lying before me. Look at these colors! Look at this design!!! I hope that the Tardis interior will also look as good on my HD television.

I admit that it's not a radical change but right now, I'm really digging it. Somehow it feels warmer than the previous Tardis interior.

You can go here to WhovianNet for a few more glorious pictures.

I have to go get a tissue now it's so beautiful. . .

Matt Smith Writing Doctor Who

Well not for the show really.

But the actor has revealed that during the six month preparation time he had before he got to play the Time Lord, Matt Smith took it upon himself to write Doctor Who stories in order to understand his character better.

Over at the Mirror, Smith, 27, said that:

"I wanted to feel like Doctor Who, understand where he'd come from. So I wrote stories of The Doctor and Einstein in Egypt which focused on their roles in the creation of the Pyramids. I had six months prep before we began filming so it gave me time to write quite a few stories."

Smith was also the creator of his own tweed jacket Doctor Costume and is hoping to add an overcoat in the future.

"Originally I was going to have a black leather coat or a blue swashbuckling coat and possibly a hat too but, somewhere along the line, the idea got dropped. I hope it's revived in time for series two."

We'll soon get to see Matt Smith's interpretation of the Time Lord this saturday at 6:20pm on BBC ONE and BBC HD and on April 17 in the US and Canada.

Thanks to Nancy for the heads up!

This is a clip from the 6th episode of Series 5 of Doctor Who titled Vampires of Venice.

New ''The Eleventh Hour'' Behind the Scenes Pictures - Doctor Who

Den of Geek has posted more pictures from the premiere episode of Series 5 of Doctor Who titled The Eleventh Hour that were released by the BBC.

Doctor Who Series 5 Episode 2 Synopsis

BlogtorWho has posted on it's website the synopsis for the second episode of Series 5 of Doctor Who titled The Beast Below:

The Doctor takes Amy to the distant future, where she finds Britain in space. Starship UK houses the future of the British people, as they search the stars for a new home. But as Amy explores, she encounters the terrifying Smilers and learns a deadly truth inside the Voting Booth.

The second episode is also written by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat.

It is set to air April 10 in the UK.

Uhura to Kick Ass in the upcoming Star Trek Sequel

While giving interviews for her upcoming movie The Losers, Zoe Saldana, whose Sci-Fi cred includes both Star Trek and Avatar, talked to HitFix about what will be coming up for her character, Nyota Uhura.

In "Star Trek" I had so much fun, but the boys had all the action. J.J. promised me in the sequel she will have at least one little fight. At least kick a guy in the groin or something.

Over at SuperHeroHype, the beautiful actress talked further about her excitement in regards to her returning to the Star Trek world with the upcoming sequel.

Well, they're perks. Besides the financial perks of signing onto films that turn into franchises is that you get to work with the actors and the directors all over again. Sometimes I almost feel like a three month experience for something that will last forever is not fair for the actor. Because what you guys get to watch, that's for you. The part of shooting the movie, that's for me. I take all those memories and that experience with me. And to get to go back to "Star Trek" and see Chris' baby blue eyes and get to kiss Spock, Zachary [Quinto] and to work with J.J. [Abrams] I couldn't have been in a better environment from the writers to the producers, etc. To get to relive that experience in another adventure in space. I'm not looking forward to the dress though. It just means I have to hit the gym two months before we start shooting, so I'm not looking forward to that.

(As an aside I need to say: You don't need to go to the Gym Zoe!)

No start date has been given yet for the Star Trek Sequel - and the movie is listed as only being in treatment as of today. Still, the movie is set to be released in 2012.

I think it will be nice to have a woman kick ass in the upcoming Star Trek movie. After all, the boys can't be having all the fun!

Matt Smith to be ''Pretty Much Naked'' on Doctor Who

Matt Smith's Doctor will apparently be pretty much naked in episode 11 of series 5. This is the episode where he gets separated from his Tardis and gets to play some foot. Never mind the fact that he is the first Doctor to ever grace the cover of a gay magazine: it's the naked part that has grasped my attention! Haha!

We've had a naked David Tennant already in the series 4 ender episode The End of Time and now it's Matt Smith's turn. Yay for the Doctor!

In an interview given to Gay Times, Smith apparently reacted to a comment made by show runner Steven Moffat that he was: “Patrick Moore in the body of an underwear model”:

“The thing is, right, I’ll take Patrick Moore, fine. But I definitely haven’t got an underwear model’s body, no way, not on this schedule. All my gym’s gone out the window. God no, I take that as a gross over-compliment to be honest. And also! When the hell has Steven Moffat seen me in my pants alone?”

The whole humble thing works for you Matt. Keep it up!

Oh and apparently, the costume designer also talks about what type of underwear the new Doctor prefers . . . I definitely need to get my hands on that magazine!

New Amy Pond Promo Pic - Doctor Who

This is a lovely promo pic released by the BBC of the Eleventh Doctor's new companion, Amy Pond, played by the beautiful Karen Gillan.

Nuff said.

No returning characters for Doctor Who - For Now

Steven Moffat has dropped the ball.

Seems like there will be no returning characters from the Russell T. Davies era - at least for now.

In a recent The Guardian article, new showrunner Steven Moffat talked about the fairytale-like qualities of Doctor Who, saying that:

''For me, Doctor Who literally is a fairy tale. It's not really science fiction. It's not set in space, it's set under your bed. It's at its best when it's related to you, no matter what planet it's set on.''

As for the question of bringing back characters from preceding series, The Guardian reported that

Moffat is reluctant to plunder Who's history without good reason – "The more you back-reference, the more it feels like a sequel and the sequel is never as good as the original" – but that isn't to say that the past is another galaxy. "Old favourites can return, provided you can do something new and exciting with them. There are no past characters coming back in this series, but I imagine that kids would love to see Captain Jack meet the new Doctor."

Personally, I don't think it doesn't mean that Davies's characters will never appear again, but rather that the Moff is looking forward to a fresh start. Plus, though River Song is Moffat's own creation, she was created during Russell T. Davies' reign as showrunner and we already know that she is returning for Series 5.

Though Steven Moffat has written some of Doctor Who's scariest episodes (Blink, Silence in the Libray and Forests of the Dead come to mind) he's also looking forward to lighter, more comical fares

"I want to do more fun. I hadn't done an episode one, which is a very different kind of episode, and I hadn't done a finale either – and that was a hoot."

There's much more to read about Steven Moffat so I invite you to read the complete article here.

Leonard Nimoy No Longer Playing Spock?

Talking to the Calgary Herald this past monday, actor Leonard Nimoy who played Spock on Star Trek for more than 46 years, told that he was doubtful that he would ever play the beloved Vulcan again.

"I don’t see it happening," says Nimoy, in an interview from his home in Los Angeles. "I’m comfortable. I’m not glad, I’m not sad. I feel like I’ve had a great ride with the character. . . we started making Star Trek pilots in 1964. I’ve been involved in Star Trek for 44, 45 years. It’s been a wonderful ride for me and it’s been great for my family. We got to do some very interesting work outside of Star Trek because of Star Trek and I’m very satisfied."

Basically he is more than happy to have passed the mantle to actor Zachary Quinto who played Spock in the 2009 rebooted Star Trek movie and who also plays popular villain Sylar on NBC's Heroes. Mr. Nimoy also appeared in the movie as Spock Prime.

Mr. Nimoy, who is currently playing the mysterious William Bell on the popular FOX Sci-Fi series Fringe, claims that this too will most probably be his final role.

Chris Evans IS Officially Captain America!!

After months of speculations and searches, it seems that the studios have settled their caps at Chris Evans to play the role of Captain America in the upcoming movie The First Avenger: Captain America

It had already been reported last friday that the role had been offered to the actor but that he had previous movie commitments that stopped him from accepting the role right away.

It now seems that things moved swiftly over the weekend and that all that remains is signing the deal.

Chris is no stranger to the role of Marvel superhero since he played Johnny Storm, A.K.A the Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four movies.

Though I had hoped to either see Supernatural's Jensen Ackles or Chuck's own Captain Awesome, actor Ryan McPartlin, in the role of Steve Rogers, I am perfectly comfortable with the idea of seeing Evans play The First Avenger. As of now Marvel Studios has not let us down.

What do you guys think of that casting decision? Is Chris Evans fit to wield ol' Captain's Shield?

Captain Jack should Remain Omnisexual on US Torchwood

The Ausiello Files just posted an exclusive story on John Barrowman and his most famous character, Captain Jack Harkness of Doctor Who and Torchwood fame.

Barrowman claims that:

I hope wherever [the franchise] goes that the show stays the same.

The last thing I would want would be for Jack to become this heterosexual, straight hero. He’s an omnisexual guy. He likes men, women, aliens, whatever. I think we should continue going down that route.

As for the US version of the show, the actor has no information yet other than Fox has commissionned a script from Russell T. Davies and that he would reprise his role as Captain Jack.

Go here to read the article.

New Aliens Revealed for Series 5 of Doctor Who

Here is two of the new aliens that will be introduced in Series 5 of Doctor Who : The Atraxi, who apparently are an intergalactic police ''who monitor the skies with an enormous spiralling eye.'' (they may have a similar function to the Judoon who were coined as police-for-hire), and The Smilers.
There will also be some sort of shape-changing alien in the premiere (these may be Smilers or another kind entirely).

Also returning for Series 5 are some old favourites including the Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, and Silurians (not yet seen in the returning series.)

New Tardis Interior Bigger than previous ones on Doctor Who

In other news, the new Tardis interior will be the biggest one to date as well. We already know there will be 2 floors for the main Tardis room with a staircase inside it.
The new interior is: incidentally, geometrically arranged in greens and reds with a retro look that incoporates a Seventies digital clock, a gramophone horn and (oh dear) a pair of hot and cold taps.

We also have some sort of description about the console:
The new console looks like it has been constructed from items out of a junk shop, including an old typewriter, a telephone, pressure gauges and a Morse code machine

One disappointing thing about the new series has always been that we never got to see much of the Tardis interior when we know there are so many rooms inside it. Most of the rooms were seen in the older Doctor Who episodes and never during Russell T. Davies' tenure as showrunner.

Matt Smith IS the Doctor! Doctor Who

Yesterday, some very, very lucky people (mainly journalists) got to see the first episode of Doctor Who series 5 aptly titled The Eleventh Hour.
This is a baptisme of fire for Matt Smith who at 27 is now the youngest actor ever to play the role of the Time Lord. The reviews are strongly positive and the concensus is that Matt Smith is not only good as the Doctor but that he IS the Doctor.
Digital Spy says that:
Matt Smith is awesome as The Doctor. He's funny, he's charming, he's clever, he is The Doctor. The episode is the perfect launch vehicle for him - daft alien threat aside - and it's both dark and comedic. Murray Gold's score is awesome.
Den of Geek claims:
So what about Matt Smith? The Doctor is still feeling the after-effects of the regeneration when we meet him, and that allows Moffat to shape the character a little as things go on. Smith's performance is really very confident too. His Doctor is clearly in the infancy of his story arc, yet we warmed to him quickly and easily. How will he fare when the threats against his character are ramped up? Perfectly well, we’d suggest, and the show looks like it’s going to benefit from having a regular companion too.

The Sun says:
Is the new kid on the Doc any good? Well yes, thank goodness. About Time, Lord ... first episodeThe Time Lord as played by youthful Matt Smith, 27, is still bonkers - but much less so than the version of predecessor David Tennant. His jokes are less laboured. And Matt's Doctor is definitely more "street" than any of the time travellers of the past. At one point in the first episode he declares "Who da man?" - proving his slang is up-to-date, even if his clothes are from 100 years ago. Amazingly, he already feels comfortable in the role - so much so that you get the strange feeling that the new Doctor IS Matt Smith

Even new showrunner Steven Moffat claimed that:
David was sort of neat and fastidious like a humming bird. Matt is gangling and shambling - he's like a terrible mess that somehow becomes elegant by magic, he said.
He brings back genuine madness to the role of the Doctor - Matt's Doctor is bonkers.

I think it's a safe bet to say that most of us wont be disappointed by Smith's interpretation of the Eleventh Doctor. I don't know about you but I'm really, really looking forward to the new series. Only a few weeks to go then, and in the words of Doctor Eleven: Geronimo!!!

The Hobbit to start filming in June

I am a huge fan of Peter Jackson's masterpiece trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. So naturally, I'm really looking forward to seeing The Hobbit, which is young Bilbo Baggins' story and the prequel to The Lord of the Rings.

Apparently, Sir Ian McKellen has recently confirmed that the movie will start filming in June of this year in New Zealand, where he will reprise the role of Gandalf the Grey.

The Hobbit will be made in two films and casting is underway in Los Angeles, New York and London. Filming will be done over the course of a year.

Expected to return are Hugo Weaving as Elrond, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Cate Blanchett as Galadriel.

The movie will be directed by Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson will produce.

Of course the most pressing question on most people's mind is who will get to play the young Bilbo Baggins. Rumours have pegged a few actors for the role, including James McAvoy, Tobey Maguire and David Tennant.

Who would be your favourite for the role?
*Update
Sir Ian McKellen's website now puts the start of the filming of The Hobbit in July

Doctor Who: Karen Gillan on her love for Amy Pond

Photograph by Suki Dhanda

In a recent Guardian article actress Karen Gillan, who plays Amy Pond the newest Companion to the also brand new Doctor, has revealed a few things concerning her character and her relationship to the Doctor.

What she says about the series and Amy's relationship to the Doctor himself is this:

To be honest, I wasn't really a huge follower of Dr Who before I got this part. I mean I knew it was huge, but … I was nothing like my mum, who's a proper diehard Whovian. She's got a Tardis money-bag, and Dalek bubble-bath. But having read the first episode I was utterly smitten, and with the character. Amy's a sassy lady, funny and passionate, and her relationship with the doctor has a really interesting dynamic." She kisses him this series: does she love him? Karen (who is in real life in a relationship), answers carefully. "She has a love for him, a really deep love for him. But not romantic.

She also talks about Matt Smith, who plays the Eleventh Doctor, and about how she feels about her character:

It's been an education in itself to work with Matt, who's so endlessly inventive, bringing something new to it every day rather than falling into the easy default scared-face. That's one of the challenges; you're faced with life-threatening situations every episode, but you can't just widen your eyes all the time. Yes, this doctor is preeeetty good. As, I've said, is Amy, and she gets to wear all these small skirts, which I will admit was very cold, but also very cool. They originally wanted to put me in trousers, but I did say I'd like to wear a skirt because – you'll understand when you watch it. Actually I think I love Amy. I'm in love with her. I want to be her.

Please go here to read more of the article, where Karen Gillan also talks about her audition for Doctor Who and where she reveals a bit more about herself.

Tardis Base just posted a new Promo Pic of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor taken from SFX magazine.

Night of the Living Trekkies? Oh My!

Did you like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? Do you love Star Trek? If you answered yes to one or both questions, you may be in for a treat.

Apparently, Quirk Classics will bring it's own brand of successful genre mixture to Star Trek with Night of the Living Trekkies.

The book is set to be writen by Kevin David Anderson and according to SciFiSquad:

NOTLT is about what happens when a rampant bout of zombism starts chewing its way through a Star Trek convention, leaving the normally meek attendants as ad hoc heroes

This is the first information I see on this book, and I've not seen anything on the Quirk Classics website yet. So we'll have to wait and see.

But all I can think about right now is to ask where's the nearest book store?

San Diego Comic-Con 2010 Here I Come!

Last year, at this time, I was making plans for what would be my first Star Trek Convention ever. To tell the truth, I had gone to one when I was about 19 (oh so many years ago) when a convention was organized in Montreal and Brent Spiner (Data) was the only guest there. But I only went to his panel. Shame on me I know. I think it was a small convention in that big hotel on René Lévesque street though truly I wouldn't know since I didn't look around haha! Star Trek: The Next Generation was still on the air back then... yep, a long time ago.

Still, Star Trek Las Vegas 2009 was my first big convention and almost 9 months later I look back on it with a huge amount of love and affection. Sure, I was dead tired, not used I was to these types of event, having travelled miles in an airplane – which I HATE to take. Plus I suffered from jet lag.

While there, some things went well, some less, and some went a bit wrong. Still I look back on it with fondness. It certainly was an incredible experience for me.

I got to meet Jonathan Frakes (believe me, that man's smile could melt a whole bunch of icebergs), Brent Spiner, Roxann Dawson and more!

I got to interview the wonderful Robert Picardo face to face (which you can read about here, here and here) and I got to spend an hour in the company of Zachary Quinto during a Meet and Greet. It was a fascinating experience.

And where else can you go have breakfast and have Jeffrey Combs and Casey Biggs eating only a few feet away from you in the morning! I tell you it's completely surreal!

Also, last year in June, I started this blog. This blog that changed my life a bit. I had never thought I would ever do something like this and it has been a strange and wonderful journey. I got to interview the lovely Sinead Keenan, the luminous Dawn Olivieri, the wonderful Wendi Lynn Allison and Patti Beninati – a woman I love as a friend and I admire deeply.

This year though, I'm not returning to the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention (though part of me really wish I would). This year, I'm going after another beast. The San Diego Comic-Con Event that will be held in July.

San Diego Comic Con will be the place where I will meet many of the friends I made on twitter and this is one of the things that I'm most looking forward to. I've made such good friends online that I cannot wait to finally meet them face to face.

This is where I also hope to meet many of the celebrities that entertain me and that I get to see weekly on my small screen and like most everyone, I have hopes and expectations concerning the many panels that SDCC will have this year.

I'm really hoping for another Heroes panel and I really want to assist to a Chuck panel. Maybe Jeffster will be there? NBC better renew both of my shows. I hope to see Zachary Quinto again and would love to meet both Zachary Levi and Joshua Gomez who play Chuck and his BFF Morgan respectively on the NBC spy comedy.

I also hope that the wonderful cast of the BBC British production of Being Human will be attending (they were SDCC in 2009) so I can shake their hands and thank them for the wonderful work they do for us the viewers. That's one thing that has me really excited about SDCC. It's the opportunity to tell these artists thank you for entertaining us week after week.

And would it be too much for a girl to ask for a glimpse for David Tennant and John Barrowman? I hope to have enough time to be in the presence of my favourite actors.

Sadly, I wont be tweeting, but I will try to update my blog about my experiences when I get home. Many of my friends on twitter will probably report live on the subject so I invite you to stay tuned. When I know who will be tweeting away, I will give out their twitter info.

Matt Smith chose his own Doctor's costume on Doctor Who

Following in Christopher Eccleston's and David Tennant's footsteps, Matt Smith a.k.a Doctor Eleven, has helped pick up his Doctor ensemble which is made up of tweed jacket, shirt and bow tie, suspenders, and black boots.

About what he wears, the 27 year old actor said:

What's interesting about this particular Doctor's look is that it's going to constantly evolve. Steven [Moffat] is very keen that he's a man who gets up in the morning and wears clothes because it's cold.

For his Doctor, the defining element is his bow tie: If you look at every Doctor, every Doctor has something, and I have a bow tie.
As always with this show you're dealing with history, and you go, 'Oh, I can't have a scarf because Tom Baker had a scarf, I can't have a pair of converse...' but I'm pleased, because the costume has come out of my personality, and it feels right on my body and my frame.

Series 5 is set to air on Easter Weekend in the UK and on April 17 in North America.

New Informations on Doctor Who Episode 11 Emerge

New informations on episode 11 of Series 5 of Doctor Who have emerged.

The episode is written by Gareth Roberts and is titled The Lodger.

Apparently, the Doctor, played by Matt smith, will become the roommate of actor James Corben's character and will be behaving badly.

The Daily Star says: the Tardis traveller won’t know what hit him. The antics of the pair could even out-shock those of Tony and Gary in the original Men Behaving Badly series.

Also, the Doctor will impress his friend by setting a television to show programs from the future.

Apparently, the Daily Star reports, a show insider said: It’s going to be the funniest episode of the new series.
“The Doc forgets to set the Tardis coordinates and it vanishes with his companion, Amy Pond, still inside.
“While he is waiting for his police box to come back, he ends up as James’s lodger.
“For once, he has to get in touch with his human side and be ordinary.”

Ftom the pictures we have recently seen, the episode seems like it will be a wild ride and a riot.

Series 5 is slated to start during Easter weekend.

And More Doctor Who Series 5 Pics Emerge!

Well, I just saw more pics of filming from the same Doctor Who episode that I posted about earlier today. You know, the one with the trolley?

The pics came from the great SFX magazine which shows the Doctor, played by Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith, playing Rugby, the European version of football.

At this point, I can only ask myself what the hell is going on in this episode???

Could Star Trek Finally Get an Oscar?

Over at Trek Movie they have an analysis of the chances of Star Trek winning an Oscar on this Sunday's Academy Awards.

This has led me to think about this and to give my own opinion and predictions on the matter.

Below are the categories in which Star Trek was nominated with a list of the other nominees:

Visual Effects
  • Avatar
  • District 9
  • Star Trek

Sound Editing

  • Avatar
  • The Hurt Locker
  • Inglorious Basterds
  • Star trek
  • UP

Sound Mixing

  • Avatar
  • The Hurt Locker
  • Inglorious Basterds
  • Star Trek
  • Transfomers: Revenge of the Fallen

Makeup

  • Il Divo
  • Star Trek
  • The Young Victoria

I believe that Avatar will win the Visual Effects category. This is almost a no-brainer. Trek Movie claims that District 9 could pull an upset over Avatar because of the quality of the effects achieved with a small budget. However, all 3 nominies definitely boast some particularly impressive effects but it's Avatar's 3D technologie and motion capture that gives it the edge.

Trek Movie is also pegging Avatar down for Sound Editing. In my opinion it's a difficult category to guess but my belief is that it will play between Avatar and The Hurt Locker. Still, I'm not ruling out Star Trek either.

The Hurt Locker seems to be Trek Movie's choice for Sound Mixing. Apparently it won the CAS Guild's award. Once again, this is a category hard to pin down and any of the nominees could walk away with the Oscar sunday.

(Seriously though. These are the two categories I have a difficult time understanding as most of you certainly do as well. Sound editing and sound mixing certainly sound alike no? And yes, the pun IS intended.)

For Makeup I'm going with Star Trek. There were some amazing makeup effects in the movie. Being nominated against Il Divo and The Young Victoria may render the competition less fierce, but I believe it would be no less deserving. One must know as well that The Young Victoria was the winner at the BAFTAS (Trek Movie blames the win on the UK home advantage which I agree with. I mean come on!)

So bar an upset in the sound category, I believe Star Trek will at least walk away with the Oscar for Best makeup.

It would be the first Oscar ever for the 30 year old franchise. Crossing my fingers!

Who do you think will win in these categories?
