Doctor Who Series 5 DVD and BluRay News

Geoff Boucher from The LA Times has the scoop on the upcoming DVD and BluRay release of series 5 of Doctor Who in North America. The expected release date is November 9, 2010.

Wow, Series 5 of Doctor Who has come and gone a week now, and I'm already really missing it.

So after 13 episodes, viewed and reviewed, now is the time to look back on Steven Moffat's first year as Doctor Who showrunner and see how it stands up.

Doctor Who in Paley Center: Interesting Tidbits

Yesterday, Steven Moffat, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were on hand in New York City's Paley Center to answer questions from journalists and to premiere the first episode of Doctor Who Series 5 titled ''The Eleventh Hour ''which airs this saturday, April 17, in North America.

Doctor Who Series 5 to have 4 More Episodes!

Boy is the BBC really pushing this season of Doctor Who. We have just learned that in lieu of the 13 episodes that we're usually set to have in a regular season of Doctor Who, it appears that we will get 17.

Doctor Who ''The Time of Angels'' Press Release

Fresh off the press today is the BBC press release for Doctor Who Series 5 episode 4 ''The Time of Angels.''

New Doctor Who ''The Beast Below'' Episode Pics

Den of Geek has once again put up a gallery of great pictures from the upcoming second episode of Series 5 of Doctor Who titled ''The Beast Below.''
The episode synopsis says:

The Doctor takes Amy to the future inside Starship UK, which contains in addition to British explorers, an intimidating race known as the Smilers

Sophie Okonedo plays a mysterious character called Liz Ten. Another character with an even stranger name is Poem Girl, played by Catrin Richards.

This will mark new companion Amy Pond's first ride in the Tardis as the Doctor and Amy will come face to face with the terrifying Smilers.

''The Beast Below'' is written by Steven Moffat so expect some good scares.

Doctor Who Series 5 the Eleventh Doctor's Theme

This is the official theme song for the Eleventh Doctor. It was apparently comfirmed by Doctor Who composer Murray Gold.

It's called ''Every Star, Every Planet'' and once again, Gold is giving us some of the most beautiful and iconic music for Doctor Who.

I always love his little musical themes for the different main characters. This man is a musical genius.

Doctor Who Episode 4 ''The Time of Angels'' Promo Pics

Here are two promo pics for the upcoming Series 5 episode 4 of Doctor Who titled The Time of Angels. [Spoiler TV]

The Doctor and Amy emerge from the TARDIS to find the wreck of the Byzantium spaceship. Down below the Weeping Angels are stirring, but the Doctor has someone else to contend with; none other than the mysterious Professor River Song.

The episode is written by Steven Moffat and marks the return of two of his most iconic creations: Professor River Song and the Weeping Angels.

Doctor Who Episode Two ''The Beast Below'' Teasers

Now that episode one, ''The Eleventh Hour'', has aired in the UK, Digital Spy has already posted ten teasers from the second episode of Doctor Who's Series 5 titled ''the Beast Below''

1. It's set more than a millennium into the future, at a time when the Earth has been abandoned and the UK is a floating spaceship known as Starship Britain.

2. That apparently makes Amelia Amy... oooh, 1306 years old.

3. The Smilers are creatures that live in arcade machine boxes, similar to the Zoltar fortune teller from BIG. Except you should try to avoid interacting with these.

4. Amy is presented with three options, Matrix-style. She chooses the second, then the third.

5. "Protestors and citizens of limited ***** are *** ** *** *****."

6. There's an homage to Katy Brand's "f***ing Queen". But this one is merely "the bloody Queen".

7. Amy: "You look *****." The Doctor: "No, you look **** ****."

8. Amy wears her nightie throughout the episode - and it gets wet.

9. He may appear to be fun and kooky, but this Doctor can get angry. REALLY angry.

10. Episode two directly segues into episode three when The Doctor gets a call from an old pal.

New Doctor Who Tonight: the Dawn of a New Era

On April 3 2010, the world will welcome the newest adventures of the newest Doctor. I am, of course, talking about Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor.

Although Matt has already made his first appearance as the Doctor in the last minutes of The End of Time which aired January 1st 2010, it will be the first time that we will properly see Doctor Eleven in action.

Matt Smith has big shoes to fill, and the question on every body's lips is : does he achieve that.

David Tennant is the most popular Doctor of all time

Smith is following David Tennant, who played the Time Lord for four years and is the most popular and well loved Doctor of all time. It's a huge and daunting task for the 27 year old actor who also happens to be the youngest man ever to play one of the most iconic Sci-Fi characters of all time.

Matt Smith is the youngest Doctor ever

Everyone should rest at ease as the general consensus seems to be that Matt Smith is quite good as the Eleventh Doctor. I myself am not overly worried about his performance, plus, from the tidbits I have seen, I have to say that I am mighty excited and looking forward to this new incarnation – at the same time I'm still mourning David Tennant's Tenth Doctor.

The Tenth Doctor's Regeneration scene was one of the saddest ever, with countless fans breaking down at his last words: ''I don't want to go'' - including me.

I loved David Tennant as the Doctor and will always see him as MY Doctor, much like many of you out there. But after the series took a year off after it's last airing in the summer of 2008, with nothing but the specials to wet our appetites in 2009, I am glad to return to the regular format of the Doctor Who Series. I have to say 2009 felt lonely and empty without it. It was a long wait.

Now, not only do we have a new Doctor but we also have a new show runner, Steven Moffat, a new companion in Amy Pond, played by the lovely Karen Gillan, a new Tardis which is bigger on the inside than the former one (there is apparently more rooms, with even a library to be seen!), a brand new screwdriver, a new logo and a new theme song!

Everything is new.

But is everything new good? More importantly can it be great?

New Doctor, new Companion, new Tardis

I'm hoping it will. I'm hoping to be entertained and to be looking forward to tune in to the Doctor's adventures week after week for the next 13 ones. I have faith in Steven Moffat – who did give us some of the greatest Doctor Who stories of the Russell T. Davies era (The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Silence in the Library, Forests of the Dead and the scary Blink), I have faith in that new fresh faced young actor Matt Smith who now plays the Eleventh Doctor and I even have faith in Karen Gillan, who plays Amy Pond.

I'm ready to jump in - take me to the Tardis! Are you?

Doctor Who ''Victory of the Daleks'' Episode Details

Den of Geek has some info about the upcoming episode 3 of Doctor Who Series 5 titled Victory of the Daleks that is set to air on April 17 in the UK.

It takes place during WWII and features the great Winston Churchill (played by Ian McNeice) and Doctor Who returning baddies: the Daleks.

Taking the information from Doctor Who Magazine number 420, available in the UK since April 1 (unfortunately we in North America have to wait 2 months before it lands here), Den of Geek reveals that:

the Daleks are referred to as "Ironsides" and have been developed by the British army as a new weapon. But is there really a "victory" in store for The Doctor's oldest foe? I guess we'll just have to wait and see but both Steven Moffat and Gatiss suggest that the title is literal...

Are we to see the Daleks gaining a victory over our beloved Doctor? Tell me it isn't so!

Also, the BBC Press Office has released the episode summary for the episode:

The Doctor has been summoned by an old friend, but in the Cabinet War Rooms far below the streets of blitz-torn London, it's his oldest enemy he finds waiting for him, as the time-travelling adventures continue. The Daleks are back – but can Winston Churchill be in league with them?

Over at Life, Doctor Who and Combom, they hypothesise that the old friend could be Captain Jack Harkness. While my own wishful thinking would go completely giddy and mad if it were true, I doubt it since Steven Moffat ruled out returning characters from the Russel T. Davies era for the moment (though River Song IS returning). But the Mof may have a sweet spot for Captain Jack. Guess we'll know when we finally see the episode. [Life, Doctor Who and Combom]
