1st AMAZING look at Being Human's Aidan Turner as Kili in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit

Finally! The one we've all been waiting for, our very first look of actor Aidan Turner (Being Human's vampire, Mitchell)as Kili in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, the upcoming sequel/prequel to The Lord of the Rings.

And if you were afraid all that dwarf makeup would hide Turner's total hotness, well you'll be really, really happy to see they've kept his smouldering looks relatively intact.

Take a look below:

Standing next to Turner is Kiwi actor Dean O'Gorman (who played a young Iolaus on Young Hercules quite a few years back)in the role of his brother Fili.

1st look at Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins: and look! The Dwarves too!

There it is! Our first official look at Martin Freeman as a young Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's upcoming The Hobbit 2-part film.

We're also getting our very first glimpse at the dwarves accompanying Bilbo on his journey (or rather, it's Bilbo who's actually accompanying the dwarves on their journey, thanks to Gandalf), with a direct view at Richard Armitage (Spooks) as Thorin Oakenshield (I wonder where Being Human's Aidan Turner is in there... hmmmm).

I have to say the dwarves are not as colorful as they're described in J.R.R Tolkien's book, but that's more in keeping with the look of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

And Freeman does look wonderful as Bilbo, doesn't he?

It's Official! Orlando Bloom is back as Legolas for The Hobbit!

While we all knew it was coming, Peter Jackson has just made it official: Orlando Bloom will be back to playing everyone’s favourite Elf Legolas in The Hobbit, the prequel/sequel to The Lord of the Rings.

Jackson probably just made a lot of fans truly happy when he announced via his Facebook page that Bloom was coming back as the awesome archer elf.

He'll also probably be sharing some screen time with Pushing Daisies' Lee Pace who was cast as Legolas' dad, King Thranduil, earlier this month.

There's gonna be a lot of eye candy for the ladies! Hooray!

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch to join Peter Jackson's The Hobbit!

In what is absolutely AWESOME news, seems that Sherlock himself, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, will be joining the cast of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit!

That’s what Cumberbatch’s co-star, actor Martin Freeman (who plays the younger Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's two-parter prequel to The Lord of the Rings), let slip when the duo picked up the BAFTA award for Best Drama for Sherlock on Sunday.

Freeman then later went on to say: "I knew I was a big mouth, I didn't know how much of a big mouth, and I've ruined everything. And now I might not have a job to go back to!"

Yes, this is awesomely cool news; and now the question on everyone's lips is: which role will Cumberbatch play?

While most of us would think he could very well play an elf (he does have the elvish look about him), Den of Geek has its own theory about just who the Sherlock actor could play. They claim he could be playing a character called Bard the Bowman.

This is the Wikipedia description of the character:

Later known as Bard I, he appears in The Hobbit. Bard of Esgaroth was a skilled archer and the heir of Girion, the last king of old Dale. He was described as "grim faced" and while a guardsman of Esgaroth he was often predicting floods and poisoned fish. He rallied the guards to defend the town when the Dragon came. Bard was able to slay the dragon Smaug with the Black Arrow after a tip from the old thrush (who had overheard Bilbo Baggins' description of Smaug) had revealed an unarmoured spot on the dragon's underside. Bard claimed a fourteenth of the treasure amassed by the dragon, which he subsequently shared with the Master of Esgaroth to rebuild the town, but the Master stole the money and ran off into the wild where he died. After its rebuilding, Bard was the first king (Bard I) of restored Dale, followed by his son Bain, grandson Brand, and great-grandson Bard II.

Goodbye Sarah Jane Smith: Elisabeth Sladen 1948-2011

Yesterday, the Whoniverse got the saddest, most unexpected news about the passing of actress Elisabeth Sladen, who died of cancer.

Sladen played one of the most beloved companions in Doctor Who history, investigative reporter Sarah Jane Smith, and went on to work alongside Doctors number Three (John Pertwee) and Four (Tom Baker), as well as later meeting up with Ten (David Tennant) inWho's series 2 episode School Reunion -- which led to getting her own spinoff series, The Sarah Jane Adventures -- and recently with Eleven (Matt Smith) in Death of the Doctor.

The BBC has released a long and heartfelt tribute to Lis Sladen which you can read here.

All I can say is that it's such a shock, and I'm extremely sad about the passing of this lovely woman, who left us all too soon, all too young.

RIP Elisabeth Sladen. You will be missed.

SFX Magazine has revealed the title for Neil Gaiman's upcoming Doctor Who episode (the fourth one) but it may not be all that it appears to be . . .

Are you guys ready?

It's . . .

THE DOCTOR'S WIFE!

However, in this episode, River Song (played by Alex Kingston, and the one we all think is the Doctor's wife but may turn up to be someone completely unexpected) is nowhere to be seen and instead we have a mysterious character called Idris, played by Suranne Jones (Coronation Street, Single Father).

About Idris, SFX reports:

In a column for Doctor Who Magazine, Gaiman described Suranne’s character as “someone who is beautiful, and who bites, and who might just turn out to be an old acquaintance with a new face…”, adding, “it starts in void-space, with something – or someone – we have not seen since [1969 Patrick Troughton story] ‘The War Games’, and a knock on the TARDIS door…”

Actor Michael Sheen (Underworld, Tron: Legacy) will also voice a character in this episode.

Will it end up being another not-as-simple-as-it-seems episode like The Doctor's Daughter or will Idris TRULY be, the Doctor's Wife?

Inspector Lynley's Nathaniel Parker to join the cast of BBC's Merlin!

There will be a new addition to the cast of BBC One's fantasy-adventure series Merlin as the always awesome Nathaniel Parker, star of the Inspector Lynley Mysteries, is joigning the cast as Arthur's (Bradley James) uncle Agravaine for the upcoming fourth season!

Now that's truly awesome news for the series. Perhaps it also announces the departure of a series regular and Parker is being brought in as a replacement? As a father figure perhaps? Or perhaps even as a villain? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Plus, Merlin will also return with a full season of 13 episodes instead of the previously-announced 10 eps order it had received back in Octorber and the Knights of Camelot will feature more prominently in future episodes of the upcoming new season.

STARZ has finally announced the air date for the newest installment in the Torchwood series entitled Miracle Day. So get your calendars ready everyone!

STARZ announced today that “Torchwood: Miracle Day” will premiere on Friday, July 8th at 10pm ET/PT. Hilarious Craig Ferguson - The lost "Dr. Who" unaired opening video

This is an unaired opening song-and-dance little number that Craig Ferguson did for all the non Doctor Who fans of his Late, Late show, that was supposed to air on November 16th when Matt Smith guest-starred on the show.

That opening segment wasn't cleared by the BBC and Ferguson was apparently pretty pissed at this. But now, it has finally made it online for all to see. And it's frakin' hilarious!

Doctor Who Christmas Special Title Revealed

Today, the BBC has revealed the title for the highly anticipated Doctor Who Christmas special that will air on December 25 in the UK and it's called . . . A Christmas Carol!

OK, not too creative I must say but there you have it!

This is the BBC's press release:

Back in July, Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning, revealed the story will be, 'Doctor Who's clever twist on the much loved A Christmas Carol' and now the title reflects that! We can enjoy a preview of the adventure on Friday, 19 November on BBC One for Children in Need and then there's less than six weeks until the episode airs.

If you can't wait until then, watch BBC One on Friday because apart from the preview of A Christmas Carol you can find out what happened when two young fans of Doctor Who had their dream come true... It's a very special treat featuring Matt Smith and continues Doctor Who's long tradition of supporting Children in Need.

A Christmas Carol reunites Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill and guest stars Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Singing Detective) and Katherine Jenkins. Right now we don't know much about the special, but earlier in the year, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, confirmed, 'Oh, we're going for broke with this one. Filming has ended for Series 4 & 5 of Primeval

Good news everyone! Den of Geek reports that filming for both series 4 and 5 of Primeval has finally ended in Dublin, Ireland, where the show had relocated for filming.

Series 4 and 5 total 13 episodes that will be split in two, with series 4 airing 7 episodes early next year (probably in January) on ITV, while the back 6 episodes that make up series 5 will be aired later on UKTV's Watch Channel probably mid-2011.

Primeval's executive producer Tim Haines said of the "bigger and better than ever" series (the episodes reportedly cost more than £1 million each to produce) that:

"The new series is, by far, the best yet and we're really proud of what we've done. The non-stop action and the cast of monsters and creatures in each episode are going to blow audiences away and the fans are really going to be excited and amazed."

I really, really like Primeval. The popular sci-fi dinosaur show is one of my guilty pleasures along with Merlin (which I've currently discovered - shame on me for discovering it so late I know) and Doctor Who and I'm looking forward to see what the newest seasons will bring.

Supernatural's Mark Sheppard to guest-star on Doctor Who!

Seems like Mark Sheppard is in every Sci-Fi series to hit television these days. From Battlestar: Galactica, Chuck, Warehouse 13 and most recently as the demon Crawley on Supernatural.

Now word is that Sheppard is guest-starring on the upcoming series 6 of Doctor Who; it's believed he will appear in the two-parter series opener penned by Steven Moffat that will have the cast and crew partly filming the episode in the US this November.

The cat was let out of the bag during this weekend's sci-fi convention ValleyCon 36 when an announcement was made that Sheppard had to pull out of the event.

"We had just booked Mark's airline tickets a week ago when less than 12 hours later he got the dream job of any kid who grew up in England. He [has] landed a huge role in the new Doctor Who."

I'm just wondering what ''huge role'' Sheppard will play, but it will be great to see him alongside Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. And who knows, maybe he'll even get to be in the TARDIS!

Primeval series 4 & 5 to have more crashing beasts to terrorise you!

After months of not hearing anything, there's finally a bit of news on the very highly anticipated upcoming series 4&5 of Primeval!

In fact, the last time I talked about Primeval was in July, when I made a post as complete as I could about all that was known about the series at the time so far (which you can read here).

According to producer Tim Bradley, who spoke to SFX's Red Alert, since most of the main characters becane stuck in the Mesozoic era:

The ARC is under new management because the disappearance of key personnel has left Lester a bit stranded. So the old team is joined by new characters who deal with the situations that happened off camera between the two years. There’s this new character, Philip Burton [played by Deep Space Nine’s Alexander Siddig], who’s a venture capitalist, and he’s been brought in to finance the new ARC set-up. One of his main areas of interest is investigating the science behind the anomalies. He’s really filling what Cutter’s demise left – a bit of a gap in the scientific journey.

Nick Cutter (Douglas Henshall) was somewhat replaced during series 3 by ex-policeman Danny Quinn (Jason Flemyng), who may be returning, although probably briefly, to the series.

Bradley also say that the tone of the series will remain the same as the previous three series:

The majority of episodes will give you what everybody seems to want, which is a sort of tubthumping crashing beast to terrorise you. I think all our co-financiers want us to keep making the better show, but the same show. We don’t want to change the appeal of the programme, or take it in a direction that makes it harder for the younger audience to enjoy. That said, we are trying to make sure there are a few more adult beats for people, and we do perhaps want to push the creatures being a little more visceral.

There you have it! I'm really looking forward to the new season which should air in early 2011. Bring on more tubthumping crashing beasts!!

And so it's official: The TARDIS will land in the good Ol' US of A to film parts of the first two episodes from series 6 of Doctor Who!

Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Artur Darvill, and the entire cast and crew will leave Wales around mid-November to film the opening episodes of Series 6 in Utah. Though it's not the first time a Doctor Who story has taken place in the US, it will be the first time the series is actually filmed there.

In 1996, Doctor Who: The Movie, which featured the Eight Doctor played by Paul McGann and whose story took place in San Francisco, was actually filmed in Canada.

Written by Steven Moffat, the first two episodes, deemed to be a ''spectacular'' two-parter, will mark the return of everyone's favourite mysterious Doctor Who person ever -- River Song!

DOCTOR WHO TO FILM IN THE U.S. FOR THE FIRST TIME

Upcoming season's first two episodes to be set in the U.S.

The BBC announced today that season six of Doctor Who, which delivered record ratings for BBC AMERICA earlier this year, will open with a spectacular two-parter set in the U.S. and penned by 'Who supremo' Steven Moffat.

In the special two-parter co-produced with BBC AMERICA, key scenes will be filmed in Utah for a story set in the late '60s in which the Doctor, Amy and Rory find themselves on a secret summons that takes them on an adventure from the desert in Utah - right to the Oval Office itself.

Production on episodes one and two of the new season starts in Cardiff this month and Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will then travel to America in mid November to shoot pivotal scenes. They will also be joined by Alex Kingston who reprises her role as River Song.

Showrunner and lead writer, Steven Moffat, said: "The Doctor has visited every weird and wonderful planet you can imagine, so he was bound get round to America eventually! And of course every Doctor Who fan will be jumping up and down and saying he's been in America before. But not for real, not on location - and not with a story like this one! Oh, you wait!"

Piers Wenger, Head of Drama BBC Wales and Executive Producer, added: "Steven's scripts generally inspire us to go that extra mile - this time we're going that extra four thousand. Thanks to our friends at BBC AMERICA and to the continuing ambition of our lead writer and production team, the first two episodes of Matt Smith's second season as the Doctor are going global and look set to become Doctor Who's most action-packed and ambitious season opener yet".

The new season follows on from the Doctor Who Christmas special guest starring Katherine Jenkins and Michael Gambon which is due to premiere at Christmas. Season six will start airing on BBC AMERICA in spring 2011 and has been split into two blocks, with the second block airing in autumn 2011. By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens.

2010 has been a breakthrough year for the Doctor Who franchise across all platforms since BBC AMERICA became the official home of the series. The series reached the number one spot on the "Top TV Seasons" chart on iTunes and now Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Season hits stores on Blu-ray and DVD on November 9.

Doctor Who was co-commissioned by Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning for BBC One and Jay Hunt, Controller of BBC One and will be produced by Marcus Wilson (Life on Mars) and Sanne Wohlenberg (Margaret). New The Sarah Jane Adventures 'Death of the Doctor' episode info

Some informations regarding the upcoming special episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures featuring the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith), Death of the Doctor, have just been released and it looks that it will be a fun one, filled with reminiscing and, in all probability, its share of nostalgia.

A number of former 'Doctor Who' characters; assistants, friends, Time Lords and enemies, are all set to return to a one-off TV special to save the newest Doctor, portrayed by Matt Smith.

A number of old 'Doctor Who' characters are to save Matt Smith's Time Lord in a one-off TV special.

The time-traveller is set to be rescued from danger in a special episode of 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' - which will be called 'Death of the Doctor' - where four former Time Lords, two ex-assistants and a number of old enemy's make their TV return.

Former Tardis regulars Sarah Jane Smith - played by Elisabeth Sladen - and Jo Grant, portrayed by Katy Manning, are to unite on screen as part of an adventure to rescue The Doctor, in a story penned by former 'Doctor Who' boss Russell T. Davis.

Actress Lis said: "Uniting the past and present is a real homage to 'Doctor Who'."

However, Steven Moffat - who is behind the latest series of the show - has joked that Russell's script-writing return has proved to be problematic.

He quipped to the Daily Star newspaper: "Typical. We invite Russell back and he tries to kill off The Doctor."

Fans of the sci-fi shows will see characters Sarah Jane and Jo pair up to rescue The Doctor after they are tricked into believing he has been killed, and invited to his funeral.

But the pair quickly realise the ceremony is a trap, and learn that a group of aliens called The Shansheeth have captured the Tardis, leaving the Time Lord stranded on a planet.

These vulture-like aliens then attempt to use a "memory weave" to connect with the pair's brains and past thoughts, and learn how to unlock the time-travelling machine through their past experiences with The Doctor.

As they reminisce, viewers of the show will watch video flashbacks of previous Time Lords William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, whilst their iconic nemeses The Daleks, Sea Devils, Sontarans and Davros also make a return.

Matt will also make a special guest appearance in the show in the new series of 'The Sarah Jane Adventures', which begins next Monday (11.10.10).

Some lucky ~~bastards~~ people were lucky enough last week to attend the launch for series four of The Sarah Jane Adventures and to get a sneak preview of episodes five and six which make up the anticipated story Death of the Doctor, featuring the appearance of The Doctor himself, played by Matt Smith!

Not only are we seeing the Doctor return to The Sarah Jane Adventures but we also get the return of former Doctor Who companion Jo Grant (Katy Manning).

As a treat, Digital Spy has given us ten hints from the anticipated upcoming episode.

Some of these hints are particularly juicy and include the whereabouts of two more classic Doctor Who characters. PLUS!!! We have some hints about the Doctor's regenerations!! YES INDEED!

Good news one and all! Not only is actor Mark Ruffalo going to play Bruce Banner in the upcoming Avengers movie but he will also play his green counterpart in a motion-capture performance!

Where the Hulk was solely computer generated in his last two outings (we're talking Eric Bana's Hulk and Edward Norton's The Incredible Hulk – NOT The Incredible Hulk TV series with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno) this time the green hero will be the result of the performance of his main protagonist in actor Mark Ruffalo.

Speaking to Vulture, Ruffalo revealed that his performance will be motion-captured much like in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and in Avatar

"I'm really excited. No one's ever played the Hulk exactly, they've always done CGI. They're going to do the Avatar stop-action, stop-motion capture. So I'll actually play the Hulk. That'll be fun."

What's fun to see is that the actor is really showing his excitement at the prospect of playing the character of Bruce Banner as well:

"I really love the first TV version of it, the Bill Bixby one. I'm gonna shoot for that a little bit. He was an everyman in it. He's always on the run and trying to find love. It's really a sympathetic character, before he turns into the Hulk and fucks everything up." Also, if you needed one more reason to be excited for Avengers, Ruffalo tells he'll be playing history's first-ever 3-D Hulk: "I hope I don't bulge in anyone's face, that's all I have to say."

Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers will also star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner. Filming is set to begin in February with a release date of May 4th 2012.

This must be one of the most interesting news that I've come across today and I have to admit to be really looking forward to Ruffalo's performance in the movie. Are you?

Matt Smith talks about his upcoming appearance on The Sarah Jane Adventures

We still have a few months to go until we get a new proper Doctor Who episode with the upcoming yearly Christmas special, but we'll get to see the Doctor a bit sooner in Death of the Doctor, an upcoming episode from series 4 of The Sarah Jane Adventures, written by Russell T Davies himself.

Matt Smith revealed to SFX that he was "very excited" to be on an episode of the successful Doctor Who spinoff, where he reprises his role as the Time Lord alongside Elisabeth Sladen's Sarah Jane Smith and Katy Manning's Jo Grant.

"I did feel I was in the presence of Doctor Who royalty! Both [Elizabeth and Katy] go back a long way and occasionally I'd be reminded of the show's long and glorious past."

The actor also added:

"You never lose sight of the fact that you're part of a programme which has been around for a very long time and will doubtless go on for a very long time in the future, long after I've stopped playing the Doctor."

Matt Smith also talked a bit about his upcoming appearance in Death of the Doctor which is no small cameo but a full-blown guest-starring turn as the Doctor.

"There are rumours of the Doctor's demise, which obviously cause Sarah Jane a great deal of concern and an understandable need to try to help by rushing to his side. It's drama on a grand scale, with some tense scenes inside a secret base beneath Mount Snowdon."

A secret base beneath Mount Snowdown? Matt Smith has definitely piked my interest here! Only a few weeks to go before we see Smith as the Doctor again!

The Sarah Jane Adventures will return to BBC One on October 11 and 12.

Being Human Producer teases the return of Herrick for season 3

Talking to SFX Magazine, Being Human producer Phil Trethowan has revealed a few tidbits about the upcoming season three of the popular BBC series about a ghost, a vampire and two werewolves living together.

If you recall, Herrick (played by Jason Watkins) was killed at the end of season 1 by George (Russell Tovey) in his werewolf form, but the vampire was resurrected at the end of season 2 in a very shocking twist. Now Herrick will be back in season 3 of course but he won't specifically be the main villain in the series.

Trethowan said that:

"Herrick comes into his own, as it were, in the latter half of the series. But we've also got threats and stories that are set up in the first half of the series."

The producer also explained that there will be multiple plot threads that will come to a head in the final episode. He added:

"It's not as if Herrick replaces [the other threats], it's sort of [like he] enhances them. They all become one big story that powers through to the end of the series."

One thing for sure, it's that series three will see our four characters spending more time together. Trethowan promised that

"Those scenes where you've got all four of them together, or any combination of two or three of them, they work well. So yes, there is more of an eye on stories that unite as well as divide."

Being Human's third season is still currently being filmed in Cardiff and is set to air early next year.

The Sarah Jane Adventures "The Nightmare Man" Promo Pics!

Everyone who is currently suffering from a painful case of Doctor Who withdrawal syndrome must be eagerly awaiting the return of Elisabeth Sladen's Sarah Jane Smith as well as that of Luke (Tommy Knight), Rani (Anjli Mohindra), and Clyde (Daniel Anthony). Steven Moffat Teases Series 6 ''enormous, game-changing" cliffhanger

Everyone knows by now that upcoming the series 6 of Doctor Who will be split in two next year with the first part made of 7 episodes airing in the spring, and the second part of 6 episodes airing over the fall. And mostly everyone also knows that the split will be marked by a huge cliffhanger (I don't know about you but I really, really hate those).

In an article with Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat revealed that:

"There will be a huge cliffhanger... that we wouldn't normally do at the end of a series of Doctor Who because it would be too long before it came back. [It is] an enormous, game-changing cliffhanger for the Doctor, Amy and Rory. It will change everything for them."

He also promised that there will be revelations involving the Doctor's friendship with Amy Pond in upcoming episodes.

Moffat also teased that:

"You will see the Doctor's life change forever, you will gasp in astonishment at the true nature of his relationship with Amy and you will cry out in horror as Rory Williams stumbles to the brink of a tragic mistake."

Doctor Who is set to return to BBC One this Christmas.

Doctor Who Series 6 Episode 3 Filming Pics Galore!

There's a slew of filming pics from the upcoming third episode of Series 6 of Doctor Who online today. Titled What Are Little Boys Made Of? the episode is written by Mark Gatiss who last wrote the series 5 episode Victory of the Daleks.

The Doctor Who cast and crew are currently filming in central Bristol in a council estate where they also filmed some parts of the second season of Being Human (where George's single mom girlfriend lived). They apparently looked hard for a suitable place in Cardiff to no avail . . .

It's a three day shoot with specific locations including flat interiors, stairwells, corridors, and an area by the bins with an old lady and children. There was apparently some late night filming in the garage section of the estate with the TARDIS.

I only put up a few of those pics here where you can see Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, Karen Gillan as his companion Amy Pond and Arthur Darvill as Rory ~~Pond~~ Williams rounding up the TARDIS crew.

Steven Moffat Teases Doctor Who Christmas Special, Series 6 and River Song!

SFX has gotten their lucky little hands on the upcoming book Doctor Who The Brilliant Book 2011 coming up next month in the UK. They managed to dig into it and brought out a few not too spoilery revelations to light coming from Doctor Who sowrunner Steven Moffat.

Below is what SFX reports from the book.

About the Christmas special Moffat said:

“This one’s incredibly Christmassy. That’s true of the previous ones but I wanted to go for broke. It’s easily the most Christmassy thing you’ll ever see. It’s a huge, sentimental, lovely, jeopardy-driven story. It’s the Christmas special I’d like to see. It’s like a compilation of every Christmas movie. A big Christmas treat. But that doesn’t mean it’s without scares, and that doesn’t mean it’s without heartbreak. It has genuine tragedy in it.”

About the mysteries that will take place during Series 6 - basically we're talking the story threads picking up right from series 5 - the Doctor Who showrunner revealed:

“Nothing will be left hanging forever. Some things will be addressed relatively quickly. We’re going into the silence and what they [our italics] are… There’s been a sort of tradition, which I semi-followed through with the crack, of there just being a sort of meme through the series, and I think, actually, a bigger mystery and a bigger story is possible now. I’m going to handle it slightly differently next year.”

Moffat also adressed the whole River Song thing and that we will soon know about her identity, saying that:

“That’s absolutely coming. You’re going to find out very soon, and that means we have to do it next series, really… The critical thing here is I want to explain who she is, not explain away who she is. If you don’t deliver on most people’s expectations, and you just say, ‘Ooh, she’s a specially programmed android who believes she’s the Doctor’s wife,’ people will go, ‘That‘s a cheat.’ You can’t do that… It’s a really good story, and it’s sort of the story of next year.”

Well I do hope they wont come up with something so cheesy as someone programmed to be the Doctor's wife or something similar!

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games to return in 2011!

Following the immense success of the first three Doctor Who: The Adventure Games (a fourth is upcoming) it was announced that there will be more of these "canonical episodes" coming up next year!

20th September 2010: Doctor Who fans the world over will be once again be taking the Doctor and Amy on further adventures across time and space, as the BBC confirms that its ground-breaking Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will return in 2011, bigger and better than ever.

With over 1.6 million download requests across the first three episodes, Doctor Who: The Adventure Games have captivated families up and down the country. The final episode in this first series - to be released later this year - will take players to a whole new world as the Doctor and Amy face one of executive producer and show-runner Steven Moffat's most original creations.

Series two will once again be executive produced by the BBC Wales TV series team of Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger, Beth Willis, along with Anwen Aspden (BBC Wales Interactive). Doctor Who: The Adventure Games are being created in conjunction with leading British videogame developer Sumo Digital, and form an integral part of the Eleventh Doctor's second series.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan will reprise their virtual roles, providing full voice-overs and likenesses once again - but will also be joined by additional members of the Doctor Who cast. How interesting that comment about Steven Moffat's most original creations for the upcoming fourth game! They could very well be the Weeping Angels. I simply can't wait to see!

Doctor Who Magazine #426 Cover Features the Old Cybermen!

The new Doctor Who Magazine issue 426 is out now in the UK and it features the old style cybermen.

Interestingly, it also says that there will be ''two new seasons'' of Doctor Who to be shown in 2011. Are they saying that series 6 is two seasons? Will the split actually make it series 6 (made of 7 episodes) and series 7 (made of the back 6 episodes)? Will it be explained?

Sadly, I wont be able to read this until about a month or two since we're behind with the publication in North America.

Doctor Who Series 6 Casting News and Episode 4 Title Revealed!

There are a few casting news and tidbits about the upcoming series 6 of Doctor Who today.

The fourth episode of Series 6 of Doctor Who is called What Are Little Boys Made Of? (this is a disturbingly lame title in my opinion).

Child actor Jamie Oram has been cast as Harry in this episode. The young actor has made a few appearances in commercials in the UK but this will be his first television role. The character of Harry is described as "a troubled young boy who has a nervous disposition".

Actor Daniel Mays, who played Jim Keats in Ashes to Ashes will be playing Harry's dad. The actor will later be seen in BBC's upcoming series Outcasts.

Emma Cunniffe will be playing Harry's mother. She previously appeared with Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston in 2002's Flesh and Blood. She also appeared on The Bill and Casualty.

Written by Mark Gatiss, What Are Little Boys Made Of? is currently in production in Cardiff.

Sherlock's Martin Freeman may play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit!

Yesterday, a story broke in The Sun that beloved British actor Martin Freeman -- hot off a successful run on BBC's Sherlock as Dr. Watson -- had been in the run to play the lead role in The Hobbit, that the actor had been offered a seven figure deal, and that he sadly had to turn it down because of his commitment to film the second series of Sherlock.

Today, EW reports that the two studios behind Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, Newline and MGM, are still keen on having Freeman, and that they are prepared to work around his shooting schedule to accommodate him. Apparently, all parties are currently negotiating a deal.

If this is true -- and it actually pans out -- I think that the studio is making the right choice in choosing Martin Freeman to play the iconic role of Bilbo Baggins. Not only does Freeman look like a younger Ian Holm, who played an older Bilbo in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but he is also an excellent actor. Freeman, who is widely known as Tim Canterbury from the original UK version of The Office, also starred in another sci-fi classic: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The beloved sci-fi show created by the Great Bird, Gene Roddenberry, would later go on to spawn another four series and a total of eleven movies to this day.

Night of the Living Trekkies - Book review

Night of the Living Trekkies

After the success of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which led to more novels in the same vein (Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters for example), Quirk books decided to tackle the worlds of both Dawn of the Dead and of Star Trek - most especially its fan base, generally known the world over as Trekkies - in its newest release called Night of the Living Trekkies. The result of this mash-up is a book that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but takes all matter of geekiness to a higher level and provides quite a few chuckles along the way.

The book is basically a refreshing, summer blockbuster type fare, which bombards the readers, a.k.a. you, with Star Trek references (it does take place during a Star Trek convention after all), Star Wars quotes and also references other Sci-Fi and genre shows like Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica. Basically, it’s complete Geek nirvana.

The hero of the book is called Jim Pike, a clear amalgamation of the names of both Enterprise captains James T. Kirk and Christopher Pike (the Enterprise NCC-1701 one. Yes, Captain Jonathan Archer was technically the FIRST captain of the FIRST Enterprise, but it was the NX-01, but I digress).

A veteran of Afghanistan who’s in his early twenties, Jime Pike is a broken man; he is haunted by the deaths of some of his fellow team members, a unit of which he was a leader. He now works as a bellhop in a Houston hotel going by the name of Botany Bay (a clear reference to Khan’s ship in the original Star Trek series episode Space Seed).

You have the age-old Star Trek / Star Wars rivalry in the book in the form of a character that at first we come to know only know as Leia. She's a very tall 6’ girl who's introduced to us as dressed in a ''Slave Leia'' outfit from Return of the Jedi, and later she dons the white dress the princess wears in A New Hope. A love interest to Jim, she provides some of the major Star Wars quotes in the novel and demarks herself has being a strong heroine.

There's also the token red shirt guy with one (basically make that two - read the book and you'll know) of the funniest names ever, a wanna-be Klingon, bad guys, zombies, aliens and even an appearance from The Borg (they're mostly convention goers of course), as well as a character that resembles the Doctor from Star Trek Voyager. And in a fun move, the titles for each book chapters are taken from various Star Trek episodes from all five series: Star Trek TOS, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek DS9, Star Trek Voyager and Enterprise.

There’s not a lot of profound character development in the book - much like there isn’t much in most summer blockbuster movies. Some characters are introduced mid-book, others more early on and then they disappear for a good while before showing up during the second half. However, when in a zombie crisis, and when everything is an emergecy and the action has to move quickly, character development and background may impede the flow of the narrative. It's not a great loss but the characters could have been fleshed out just a bit more - pun intended.

Still, the book reads along at a quick pace, and the love that authors Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall have for Star Trek definitely shows. I wonder how long it will take Hollywood producers to get their hands on this book and decide to make a movie out of it. After all, as I said, it practically reads like a blockbuster.

All and all a good and fun read, and I would recommend anyone who loves Star Trek, zombies and who is even a little bit of a geek to pick up the book. For others who've never watched a Star Trek episode in their lives, they may miss the subleties and the many references to the series.

Doctor Who series 6 starts filming!

It has been announced earlier today that series 6 of Doctor Who has begun filming. In fact, filming started at 8am in Cardiff, Wales.

Series 6 will see the return of Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill on the sci-fi show. Alex Kingston is also set to return as River Song, and according to Steven Moffat, the mystery as to who she truly is will be revealed during the course of this series. However, whether it will happen before the mid-season break is up in the air.

The first episodes being filmed are episodes three and four, written by Neil Gaiman and Mark Gatiss respectively, and this block is being directed by Richard Clark.

Doctor Who will return at Christmas on BBC One and BBC HD for the one-hour special. However, the next appearance from the Doctor will be in an episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures called Death of the Doctor which is set to air in November.

The BBC has released 2 promo pics from the upcoming series 4 of The Sarah Jane Adventures (OK, it's essentially the same pic but framed differently and with one extra alien, I know).

On the pic we have main characters Sarah Jane Smith (played by the ever lovely Elizabeth Sladen), Luke Smith (Tommy Knight), Rani Chandra (Anjli Mohindra) and Clyde Langer (Daniel Anthony).

We now also have a date for the premiere of the show. The first episode will come to the UK on October 11 on CBBC. The time at which the episode will air is yet to be determined.

And don't forget! Series 4 will see the first meeting between Sarah Jane Smith, other former companion Jo Grant (played by Katy Manning), and Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor in Death of the Doctor. It will be the third episode of the series to air, so basically the 2 part episode will start airing on November 8 with its conclusion on the 15th.

Revealed: Mark Gatiss has penned a new Doctor Who episode for upcoming series 6

It was revealed that Sherlock co-creator (and Doctor Who writer and actor) Mark Gatiss has penned a new episode for the upcoming sixth series of the British Sci-Fi show.

Richard Clark, who will be directing 2 episodes, has written on his twitter acccount that he was:

In the thick of Dr Who. New drafts coming along. Mark Gatiss story wonderful.

From what Clark tweeted, and from the fact that Neil Gaiman himself revealed that his episode will probably be the third to air, it appears that the Mark Gatiss episode will air right after Gaiman's, making it the fourth story when the series begin in the spring:

I suspect these 2 [the Neil Gaiman and Mark Gatiss episodes]with go out 3&4 as planned - splitting series in two will leave less wriggle room

There you have it. I hope the new Gatiss episode will be better than Victory of the Daleks, which was one of my least favourite episodes from last series. But having seen The Great Game, Sherlock's last episode which Gatiss wrote, I know he can be utterly brilliant, so I'm crossing my fingers for an awesome episode.

Neil Gaiman talks about his Doctor Who episode table read

Author, writer, and all around Sci-Fi God Neil Gaiman, just put up a post on his blog about the first table read of his upcoming Doctor Who episode. In it, Gaiman reveals that his episode is still set to be the third to air in the spring (So YAY! we wont have to wait in the fall to see it!).

Neil Gaiman said :

the table read was pretty amazing, the guest star or stars will be fabulous, Matt's great, Arthur's wonderful and I never got to say hullo to Karen (who was amazing).

I had a meeting after the readthrough with the producers and director, pinpointing stuff that needs fixing or clarifying ("So we need to change that without making it longer or spending any money. Right."). But nothing that needs rewriting is anything other than cosmetic, and I should get it done tomorrow or Thursday.

Steven Moffat says No Daleks for Series 6 of Doctor Who

So no Daleks for series 6 of Doctor Who? That's apparently what will happen (or not happen depending on how you see it) according to the Moff himself.

Speaking at the Edinburgh Television Festival, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has indicated that there are no plans to have the Doctor's most famous enemies return for the next series, though production is not yet complete.

Steven Moffat said:

There will be a Dalek story when we've got a good idea for a Dalek story. [When that happens], there will be lots of different kinds of Daleks.

Have they run out of good Dalek stories then?

It's true that many fans have criticized the fact that the Daleks have appeared quite a few times on the series over the course of the past 5 years - ever since its return in 2005 under former showrunner Russell T Davies.

But there is something else that has me pricking my ears; its that Moffat says that when the Daleks DO return, there will be ''lots of different kinds.''

Now, is Steven Moffat talking about the different Daleks we saw emerge last season in Victory of the Daleks (the blue, yellow, white, orange and red ones)? The ''old'' ones? A mix of all of them? Could they even be completely new Daleks?

That's certainly food for thoughts.

So what do you think? Are you ultimately disappointed to see that the Daleks may not appear in series 6, or do you think that the Doctor needs a breather from everything Dalek?

Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy set to play a wizard in 'The Hobbit'!

First off – fear not! Ian McKellen is still Gandalf, but Sylvester McCoy (who was the seventh Doctor on Doctor Who) is in contention to play a huge role in The Hobbit, and the role McCoy is set to play is that of another important wizard in the Lord of the Rings lore.

Sylvester McCoy spoke to the Argyllshire Standard this weekend and confirmed he was in contention, along with another actor (no idea as to who the other actor may be), for one of the wizards part:

I am being cast in The Hobbit. We're currently in negotiations - there are two of us under consideration. It's not the Bilbo role, but could be bigger.

TheOneRing.net goes further by suggesting that McCoy could be playing Radagast the Brown, a character who is part of the Tolkien lore, though he never appeared in director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

They are basing their assumption on the fact that Radagast the Brown will have a bigger role (the fact that he wasn’t in the first trilogy at all WILL definitely make it a bigger role – just saying) in The Hobbit.

Since Sylvester McCoy almost played Bilbo Baggins (the role ultimately went to Ian Holm), it’s sweet to know that in all likelihood we’ll get to see him in The Hobbit either as Radagast or as another character.

Series 6 of Doctor Who to be Split in Two!

In a surprising and quite unexpected move, the BBC has announced that it will split the transmission of series 6 of Doctor Who in 2011 in two separate blocks.

According to the press statement, the first half of the series will air in the spring, with the second half set to air in the fall.

This is what the BBC said:

The split transmission is the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens.

Steven Moffat said: "The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!"

Right now all I can think to say is Noooooooo. I hate cliffhangers and I hate being made to wait months to resolve a story. Personally, I'm quite disappointed with this decision to split the season in half and make us wait months again to see the rest of the series -- and I'm not so sure that it will turn out to be a good move.

BBC Confirms 'Sherlock' is Back for Series 2!

Yesterday came the best news ever: BBC controller Jay Hunt announced the return of Sherlock for a second series of three 90-minutes episodes for next year. However, viewers will have to wait patiently until the Fall of 2011 to view the further adventures of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.

The series, strong of it's success both with critics and the public - the show averaged 7.2m viewers over the three Sherlock episodes: A Study in Pink, The Blind Banker and The Great Game) - recently ended it's run in the UK and will soon air here in North America starting October 24th on PBS Masterpiece Mystery.

Benedict Cumberbatch will return in the role of Sherlock Holmes, as will Martin Freeman in the role of his friend and colleague Dr. John Watson. Both actors were largely responsible for the success of the series due to their great on-screen chemistry.

Of series 2, co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss had this to say:

"We've been overwhelmed by the warmth of response to our new Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and can't wait to take them on three new adventures next year. There'll be baffling new puzzles, old friends and new enemies – whether on two, or four legs. And we might well be seeing the cold master of logic and reason unexpectedly falling. But in love? Or over a precipice? Who can tell?"

Already the mind is whirling with the possibilities - maybe Irene Adler will make an appearance in an episode? and the four-legged enemy may be foreshadowing a modern adaptation of The Hound of the Baskerville? All of this is very exciting conjecture.

Next year has never seemed so far away.

Bryan Singer Makes some BIG Revelations about X-MEN: FIRST CLASS!

Producer Bryan Singer has made some interesting and rather big revelations concerning the upcoming X-Men: First Class movie that will be directed by Matthew Vaughn.

In fact, this is the most we've learned about the movie so far besides all the casting news that have popped up recently.

- The movie will be set in the 1960s and we'll get to see President John F. Kennedy as well as Martin Luther King and Malcolm X - probably on TV.

- We'll see Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) at the time he was at Oxford and before he lost his hair and gets in the wheelchair. In fact, we'll learn what put him there. We will also get to see how Professor X and Eric Lensherr a.k.a. Magneto (Michael Fassbender) met when they were in their late twenties and what they were attempting to do by creating the X-MEN.

- The movie will have a much more international feel, with filming set to take place in the United-States and England, as well as Russia. Singer didn't want to reveal what other locales will be used in the movie yet.

- Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops and Jean Grey are NOT in the movie but Cyclops' brother Alex Summers a.k.a Havok (Lucas Till) will be in it.

- Kevin Bacon is set to play Sebastian Shaw, the leader of the Hellfire Club. Singer didn't want to confirm if we would see Shaw with his trademark ponytail and Hellfire Club garb but the guess is that we will. In his opinion, the Hellfire Club belongs to the 60s era and it would be wrong to try and modernize it.

- The costumes will be much closer to their comic-book counterparts than the costumes we saw in the previous three X-Men movies. We'll also apparently get to see what these costumes look like within the next month.

- The technology in X-Men: First Class will be inspired by the James Bond movies set in the 1960s. In fact, seems they want to give the movie a 'Bond feel' to it.

Does that make you confident and excited with the direction Producer Bryan Singer appears to be taking the movie in? Are you now looking even more forward to June 3rd, 2011?

Read a scene cut from Neil Gaiman's Upcoming 'Doctor Who' Series 6 Script

Over on his blog, author Neil Gaiman has posted a scene cut from his upcoming Doctor Who series 6 script which Gaiman reveals will be table read on August 31. The writer mentions that the script has arrived to what will probably be it's final form - which is the tenth draft - and that it will most likely be the one that will be used for the table read.

Since it's the tenth draft, many scenes and bits of dialogue were cut during the writing process and Neil Gaiman explains about those cuts and why they were made :

Anything that wasn't moving the plot forward has gone. Lots of interesting chatty background conversations in the TARDIS, gone. Lines of dialogue that were fun in themselves but weren't really needed? Gone. And the food scene? Very gone indeed. It's been gone since draft six. Given that it's not there any longer, and that that tells you absolutely nothing about the story except that it now doesn't have a scene with a bowl of food in it, I thought I'd borrow it back from Lucien's library.

And here is the scene that was cut from draft six, in which the Doctor has been given something possibly alien to eat :

'Doctor Who' - Ever wanted to fly the TARDIS? Well now you can!

Remember those Doctor Who: The Adventure Games? Well the first two ones have already been released and they appear to be a resounding success, with over 1.3 million downloads in the UK only.

In these adventures - which are proper episodes and part the fifth series - players got to go head to head against two of the Doctor's most dangerous enemies and try to defeat them.

They faced the Daleks in the first game titled City of the Daleks, and the Cybermen in Blood of the Cybermen, the second game to be released.

So what else could Executive Producer Steven Moffat and writer James Moran (Doctor Who, Torchwood) come up with to beat those two experiences? How about finally getting to fly the TARDIS!!

The BBC has just released the upcoming third game's description and title today on their website:

The title of the next Adventure Game has been confirmed as TARDIS and it's released on this site on Friday, 27 August.

It will feature monsters, terrifying new dangers for the Doctor and Amy and offers an amazing insight into the world's most famous blue box. It's also been announced that the game will give players the opportunity to pilot the Doctor's iconic time machine.

Lead Writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, confirmed, 'Since 1963, kids have wondered what it would be like to control the TARDIS. Now we're handing complete control of the most powerful ship in all of space and time to a generation of children. Everybody duck!' He also told us, 'TARDIS is a brilliant, brilliant adventure. It's funny, touching, terrifying, amazing - everything a Doctor Who episode should be.'

The official press release promised, 'the game allows players to explore the Doctor's wondrous drawing room, featuring treasures and artefacts from his many adventures - a location specially created for the game, which will go on to form part of the Doctor Who canon'.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan return as the Doctor and Amy and once again the game is executive produced by Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger, Beth Willis and Anwen Aspden (BBC Wales Interactive), alongside Charles Cecil. Music is by Murray Gold and TARDIS is written by James Moran whose previous credits include Torchwood, Spooks and the Tenth Doctor story, The Fires of Pompeii.

It's the third Adventure Game and will be available at no extra cost to UK households, simultaneously on PC and Mac from this site. Users outside the UK will be able to purchase and download it on its UK release date, 27 August.

Who will play Peter Parker's new love interest in the new Spider-Man movie?

The search for Peter Parker’s a.k.a. Spider-Man’s love interest is still ongoing weeks after Andrew Garfield was cast in the role. However it seems to have narrowed down to a few select actresses.

Those actresses are currently meeting up with Marc Webb, the director of the new Spider-Man movie, and with Garfield. It has not yet been revealed who exactly is this new love interest, but these actresses are most likely reading for the part of Gwen Stacy rather than that of Mary-Jane Watson, who was Spider-Man’s love interest in the first three films starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.

Most of you already know that Gwen Stacy was Peter Parker’s first love in the comic books. So this 'love interest' in the rebooted movie is either Stacy or she is a completely new character. However, I believe that Stacy is the likeliest choice for the new movie if they are still staying close to the comic books.

Heat Vision Blog reports that the actresses being considered for the role of the love interest are:

Imogen Poots – she is currently filming the Fright Night remake.

Ophelia Lovibond – is a British actress who appeared in Nowhere Boy, 4.3.2.1, and London Boulevard.

Lilly Collins – she was in The Blind Side and will appear in Priest.

Teresa Palmer – she was the love interest in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and will appear in I Am Number Four. She apparently read with Garfield last week.

Emma Roberts – the actress has apparently flown from the set of Scream 4 to read twice for the Spider-Man movie.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead – was the love interest In Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Was in the running but has apparently fallen out of the running.

Heat Vision Blog also reports that these actresses were not undergoing screen-tests but that they were rather doing readings and meetings as it’s apparently early in the process.

Most of these actresses, with the exception of Emma Roberts who already has quite the flourishing career, are up-and-coming actresses that will fit in with Andrew Garfield’s fresh face.

Filming for the new movie is set to start in December.

'Doctor Who' - the Doctor, the Master and the Daleks top SFX poll list!

SFX has published its 'SFX 200 Poll Results' and three Doctor Who characters have come out at the top of three categories including 'Favourite Hero', 'Favourite Villain' and 'Favourite Monsters'!

The Doctor edged out Malcolm ''Mal'' Reynolds a.k.a Captain Tightpants (Firefly) as everyone’s 'Favourite Hero' in the poll, even beating out perennial favourites Han Solo (Star Wars) and Indiana Jones. Not bad for a character that has seen eleven incarnations and actors since the British Sci-Fi series started out in 1963.

On the other hand, the Doctor’s mortal enemy, the Master, has been crowned 'Favourite Villain' over other heavy weights such as Darth Vader (Star Wars) and The Joker (Batman). Even Lex Luthor (Superman) didn’t fare so good, coming up at only number 16 on the list. Davros (Doctor Who) also made the list and took the fifth place in the poll.

Davros's creation, the Daleks -- better known as the Doctor's other arch-enemies -- took the first place in the 'Favourite Monsters' category over such classics as the aliens from the various Alien franchise, the Borg (Star Trek), and Cybermen (Doctor Who).

Torchwood: The New World Official Synopsis and Character Descriptions!

Starz has just released the series synopsis for Torchwood: The New World as well as the description of its three main characters : Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), and Rex Matheson (TBD).

When C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy, he finds himself unearthing a threat which challenges the entire human race.

The answers seem to lie within an old, secret British institute, known only as Torchwood. But Torchwood was destroyed, years ago, and the keys to the institute are held by its only two survivors – former Police Officer Gwen Cooper, who has long since disappeared along with her husband and child, and the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, a man whose history seems to stretch back centuries.

His choice of career is significant. Someone like Rex could make a fortune in Wall Street, or Hollywood. But choosing the C.I.A. says a lot about him: that for all his swagger, he does believe in justice. And will fight for it.
Slowly but surely, we see him make friends. He’s thrown together a bunch of people known as Torchwood, the only people who might have the answer to a global mystery. To Rex, at
first, they’re a bunch of freaks. Welsh women and World War 2 Captains, what’s that about?! But as they race from one crisis to another, dodging assassins, blackmail, corruption and conspiracy, from Washington to Wales and the slums of Shanghai, Rex forges friendships in the heat of fire. From the Rex Matheson Character description it seems that Torchwood: The New World will partly takes place in Shanghai. That's rather interesting . . . Also of interest is the mention of a new surgeon joining the Torchwood team.

More casting news about X-Men: First Class this morning.

Deadline has announced that Alice Eve, who was supposed to play Emma Frost a.k.a. the White Queen in the Matthew Vaughn movie, is now out. The role has been given to Mad Men's own Betty Draper, Emmy nominated actress January Jones, instead.

It also appears that Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road), daughter of singer Lenny Kravitz, will be playing Angel.

This lat bit of news has me going 'Whut'? Angel is a MAN in the comics, going by the name of Warren Worthington III. The role was played by Ben Foster in X-Men The last Stand.

This change, if it's true, is not making me a happy camper at all. Do they really have to change a long-time established character's gender? I feal this is a terribly bad decision and I'm afraid the movie could be heading for a train wreck . . .

'Sherlock' Star Benedict Cumberbatch Not offered 'Doctor Who' Role after all?

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who just finished a first and very successful run as Sherlock Holmes in the Steven Moffat - Mark Gatiss co-created BBC series Sherlock (series 2 has been confirmed last week), made some very interesting revelations in regards to the Doctor Who role.

Talking to the Sunday Times, the 34 year old actor revealed that he never turned down the role of the Doctor simply because he never was offered a shot at the Tardis contrarily to what was previously reported here.

Even if he had been offered the role, Cumberbatch says he would have refused it :

“I’d turn it down anyway. Jumping onto school stages and giving out prizes and saying ‘I am the Doctor’, it’s not where I want to go.”

For those of you who were still holding out hope that the actor could still play the Doctor when current Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith chose to quit the role, time is to face the fact that Cumberbatch will never be the Doctor.

Still, it doesn't rule out the rumour that he is set to appear in an undisclosed amount of Doctor Who episodes in a guest stint for series 6 (you can read the original post here). Maybe Cumberbatch will be playing the mysterious villain we heard in the Tardis in the penultimate episode of Series 5, The Pandorica Opens, rumoured to be Omega?

Whether he does or not, it looks like the future is shining brightly for Benedict Cumberbatch who has just won the part of Peter Guillam, George Smiley's (Gary Oldman, Batman Begins ) MI6 protégé, in the remake of the movie Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by Swedish director Tomas Alfredson that will come out in 2012; and he will soon start filming on the Steven Spielberg war movie War Horse about Michael Morpurgo’s story of the Devonshire farm horse taken to France in the first world war.

'X-Men : First Class' adds Three new Actors to the Cast!

With a cast that boasts Kevin Bacon as the as-of-yet-unrevealed villain, Scottish actor James McAvoy as the young Charles Xavier (Professor X), Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr (Magneto) and Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy (The Beast) one wonders who else can be added to this already diverse cast? Well how about Jason Flemyng, Rose Byrne and Oliver Platt?

All three actors have just been added to the already impressive list of actors that will appear in X-Men: First Class, the upcoming 20th Century Fox film from director Matthew Vaughn.

Fresh off a recent stint as the villainous Calibos in Clash of the Titans, British actor Jason Flemyng (ITV’s Primeval) will play Nightcrawler’s father Azazel, and his character will indeed be covered in heavy makeup and boast a tail like his famous son. You can read about the character here.

Australian actress Rose Byrne (Troy, Damages) will play Moira MacTaggert, a role that was previously played by Olivia Williams in X-Men: The Last Stand. She will be Charles Xavier's love interest in the movie and is a scientist who specializes on genetic mutations. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress is currently in talks for the role but Deadline reports the news as if she's already been cast.

As for Oliver Platt, Deadline reports that the actor is set to play ‘The Man in Black’ a character who is apparently not a mutant. Nothing else has been revealed about him as of yet.

'Sherlock' Coming to North America on October 24th!

I've been talking a lot about Sherlock these past few weeks, putting up pictures and some video interviews. Now I have some good news for my North American readers.

You will be happy to know that Sherlock is finally coming to PBS Masterpiece Mystery with the first episode, A Study in Pink, set to air on October 24th.

Episodes two and three, The Blind Banker and The Great Game, will follow on October 31 and November 7 respectively.

Co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock is a modern re-imagining of the adventures of the popular Sir Arthur Conan Doyle detective hero, Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), and his ever faithful sidekick Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman).

'The Avengers' To Start Filming in Early 2011!

Now that The Avengers team is assembled, all we were waiting for was a start date for the filming of the eagerly anticipated Marvel movie.

Well, according to SuperHeroHype, The Avengers will start filming early next year - more exactly in February! It will begin shooting a mere few months after the start of filming of another little superhero movie, namely Sony's untitled-as-of-yet Spiderman reboot.

The Avengers is directed by Buffy and Angel Mastermind Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson.

The movie is expected to shoot in Los Angeles.

'Being Human' Creator Hints at Something More Physical Between Annie and Mitchell

Speaking recently to Collider, Being Human showrunner and creator Toby Whithouse hinted at something more than just friendship between two of the show's main characters, ghost Annie (Lenora Crichlow) and vampire Mitchell (Aidan Turner).

When asked if death is what keeps Annie and Mitchell connected, Whithouse replied that:

Yeah. Because we end Season 2 with Annie trapped on the other side and Mitchell declaring he’s going to go get het, there’s a moment at the beginning of Season 3 where they’re discussing this and George is nervous about Mitchell doing this, and he says, “This is life and death that we’re talking about. These things shouldn’t be messed with.” And, Mitchell says, “Me and Annie are already dead. It doesn’t get more messed with than that.” There is a connection between them, on the basis of that.

Also, there’s the fact that both of them are going to exist forever, in the state that they are. The notion of this screaming eternity in front of them is a terrifying prospect. There’s something about that that unites them.

Perhaps tragically, there is also an element of Mitchell that would fit into Annie’s relationship history. She’s not exactly made good choices, so why not go for a 120-year-old mass murderer? It’s the next logical step, after dating the guy that killed you. Annie is a character who always looks for the good in another person. Whatever Mitchell has done, there is still an enormous vein of decency, kindness, compassion and humanity within him, and Annie responds to that very well.

When it was mentioned that Mitchell can experience physical love, and Whithouse was asked about how far Annie could go, the showrunner quipped :

They kissed once. All I can say is, watch Episode 4 in Season 3. All will be answered, or maybe it will just be answered with more questions. But, it will be addressed in some kind of vague way.

Is Whithouse telling us that Annie and Mitchell will try to go all the way? Something will definitely happen I should think. But all I know for certain now is I simply can't wait for season 3, which is currently being filmed and will air in the UK in early 2011.

Elementary my Dear Watson! 'Sherlock' is returning for a second Series!

Good news everyone! Sherlock Series 2 is a go!

According to Sherlock producer, Sue Vertue, the show will indeed return for a second series.

This is good and perhaps not so unexpected news, following the critical and popular success of the BBC One series.

Vertue, who appeared on BBC Breakfast alongside her husband and show co-creator Steven Moffat, revealed that an agreement has already been made with the BBC :

There will be more.We're having a meeting, just to sort of talk about how many and when really. Steven and Mark [Gatiss] are both busy. Obviously Steven is doing Doctor Who as well so it's just when we are going to do them.

The sad news is that the BBC head of drama, Ben Stephenson, recently said that any new episodes of the show will not air for "at least a year".

I say leave Doctor Who into capable hands and do the second series of Sherlock now Steven!

Sherlock's last episode, The Great Game, ended the series' three-episode run last Sunday night in the UK and was watched by 7.3 million viewers.

'Torchwood: The New World' - Russell T Davies Talks Captain Jack's Return, his Love Life, and More!

Russell T Davies made further revelations about Series 4 of Torchwood: The New World - which doesn't start filming until next January - during the Television Critics Association fall press tour.

For one thing, according to Davies :

It's [the 10-part storyline] far more complicated than just a monster. I think it's a brilliant idea, and when you hear it, it will make sense and you'll see how big it is. It could have filled 20 hours. It's a big 10-hour story.

Davies also talked about the return of Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) on series 4, and that he will no longer be in the same sad, depressed state he was in when Children of Earth ended. The series' showrunner says :

He immediately appears. His first appearance in this is running and fighting and being brilliant. Then you'll discover he's carrying all the legacy of that with him, because that would be an awfully dull way to start. That's why you end those shows on that note, because they're ending. We'd never start The New World that way. It's very keen to move on, but at the same time we're going to be absolutely faithful to people who followed Capt. Jack's story and to John Barrowman's career. So we do acknowledge the past stories while at the same time moving on to new stuff. He was left very dispirited and almost defeated at the end of the last series, which we acknowledge and we deal with in a language that will both satisfy old fans and also will move forward into the future.

The way Russell T Davies describes Captain Jack's return introduction for series 4 quickly made me think of David Tennant's Tenth Doctor; with the running, the fighting - OK maybe not the fighting - but the being brilliant certainly, it's all very reminiscent of the Davies Doctor Who era is it not?

The showrunner also revealed his plans for our beloved hero's love life, who is often referred to as being an omnisexual (can't recall who coined that), simply meaning Captain Jack would sleep with anyone who caught his fancy, be it man, woman, or alien. No preferences.

He can sleep with man, woman or alien. Yes, absolutely, and not just with men. It's important to point out that he's bisexual. The trap you fall into with bisexual men is only having them sleep with men. So it's men and women. You'll see the full range of his appetites, in a really properly done way. It's not just exploitative. We always have done that. Equally, open sexuality has to include everything, and that means having a husband/wife great big crime-fighting team and happily in love. That's there in that. That's brilliant, so you have to include the whole gamut so you can't just say the minority stuff is the important stuff

Davies also hinted at the state of Gwen (Eve Myles) and Rhys' (Kai Owen) marriage when the series returns next summer. Gwen and Rhys will have the baby by then, and here is what Davies revealed about Torchwood's favourite married couple :

Gwen, who is the lead woman of the series, has a lovely husband called Rhys, played by Kai Owen, and now a baby between the two of them. So the sight of Gwen Cooper with baby in one arm and gun in the other is going to be our poster, I hope, because that's just going to be irresistible. I can't imagine Gwen without him, and so he's back. He's a very big part of events. By the time this starts, it will have been off air for two years, I think. We're taking a brand-new audience into consideration. Rhys is now ahead of the game, as it were. There are no secrets. They're a team. It's a really lovely thing to write in a storyline is a husband-and-wife team who love each other. They have fun with each other. It's kind of sexy. It's kind of sexy in a really unusual way. So I love that coupling. He's right up there with the team.

OK, not so sure about Davies' idea of Gwen with the baby in one arm and the gun in another on a poster. Hope the storyline wont have her running around with the baby either. The risk, with the introduction of babies and kids on most established television shows, is that they often tend to dull (or let's be honest - ruin) a series (the same can be said about movie franchises). Let's hope that Russell T Davies will escape the baby trappings and that it wont have that effect on Torchwood.

As I mentioned in my previous post here the two new characters - CIA agent Rex Matheson and Esther - have yet to be cast since the series wont start filming for another 5 months. But Davies talked a bit more about them, especially about Rex Matheson, who will sort of take on the role Gwen had when Torchwood first began, as an introductory character :

That character is an entrance into the new story. He's a CIA agent. The fact that Torchwood has been off the air for a while and is also brand-new to a lot of people is actually being used as a part of the story in that Rex has no idea what Torchwood is and has to investigate Torchwood. Torchwood was destroyed, disbanded. It's like a legend now. It's like something that ceased to exist a long time ago that's spoken of only in whispers. So Rex is drawn into this, has no choice but to be drawn into this through complications that you will see in the story. Also, he's at the CIA. We also have a watch analyst at the CIA called Esther, who is now friends with Rex but works with colleagues of Rex's. The two of them become embroiled in the Torchwood legend and investigate what Torchwood is or was.

There you have it. Captain Jack will have a new love life, though with whom or what is open for debate at the moment, though I gather there will be more than one for him. But we are assured that he will make a brilliant return which makes me happy. I love a happy Captain Jack. There will be more Gwen, Rhys and the baby, plus those brand new CIA characters.

Torchwood Series 4 Title and Info Revealed! Plus some News regarding the Return of James Marsters

Torchwood creator and showrunner Russell T Davies and executive producer Julie Gardner provided some fresh information regarding the upcoming series 4 of Torchwood this past Saturday (August 7).

For starters, Zap 2 It reports that the title of series 4 is Torchwood: The New World. The website is right to report that the title does give the series somewhat of a ''Pocahontas'' feel when you hear it. Not sure I like the title for now. Hope it'll grow on me or that they will change it.

Now on to more news.

Davies reveals that the new Torchwood storyline ''is something that's been ticking away in the back of my head for a long while," following the success of Torchwood: Children of Earth - which sort of took Davies by surprise.

Of the new, overarching 10-part storyline, Davies says that it :

[...] has this global sweep to it which is justified by the story. I hate to say 'international in scope' because it usually means a scene set in Berlin for no reason.

The show's creator and showrunner also confirmed that most of the series will take place in the US and abroad but that it will also return to it's Welsh roots. Executive producer Julie Gardner says that :

The Welsh setting still features in a really significant way as we move forwards so when we start filming in January, we will start filming in Wales. There will be beautiful landscapes. Gwen Cooper is still that character. She's still Welsh. Her story will take place in the U.S. but also very much in the UK, so that flavor of Wales will be very apparent.

Davies reveals that the storyline will take place right after the events of Torchwood: Children of Earth, and that it will deal with Captain Jack Harkness' (John Barrowman) state of mind after the tragic events that took place in the last series which saw the death of his lover, Ianto Jones, and Captain Jack's ultimate sacrifice of his grand-son in order to save all of Earth's children.

Torchwood: The New World will also see the return of Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) as well as that of her husband Rhys Williams (Kay Owen) and their baby (Gwen learned she was pregnant during the events of Children of Earth). We will also see the introduction of new character Rex Matheson, a CIA agent, who as yet to be cast. Of Matheson, Davies says that:

Rex has no idea what Torchwood is and has to investigate. Torchwood has been destroyed. It's like a legend now, it's almost ceased to exist a long time ago and is spoken only of in whispers. We also have a watch analyst at the CIA called Esther. The two of them become embroiled in the Torchwood legend and investigate what Torchwood is or was and they find themselves on the run and meeting Captain Jack and Gwen, having to decide whether they're friends, whether they're enemies. It's a decision that takes a long time to be decided. That's part of the 10 episodes is the two teams coming together, a lot of sparks, a lot of excitement.

To my chagrin, however, Russell T Davies confirmed that we wont see Captain John Hart (James Marsters) when Torchwood returns, but he is keeping the door open for the character to return in future series. I had mentioned here that James Marsters was very keen on coming back to Torchwood. Let's hope it WILL happen in the near future.

As a bonus, the showrunner confirmed that since the series is on Starz - a premium cable channel that doesn't shy away from nudity or the occasional sex scene (you have to see Spartacus if you haven't yet. Not only is it a wonderful series but it contains a lot of nudity and sex) - there could be the occasional nude sex scene but only if the story demands it. In Davies' words: ''There's nothing worse than a great big global international thriller that stops for a sex scene. Get on with it please.''

Also, there is some good news for the international fans of the show: When the series will air both in the UK and the US, the scheduling will be very close on both side of the pond. All I can add to this is hooray!! There's nothing worse, in my opinion, than delays between airings of a popular series in different countries.

Torchwood: The New World will begin filming in Wales in January 2011, and the series is set to air on Starz in the summer.

Original 'V' Actress To Join Current 'V' Series!

This must be one of the most awesome, geek worthy news I've heard all week.

Jane Badler, who played the utterly cool, gerbil eating, alien visitor and villainous leader Diana on the original V series will reprise her famous role in the season premiere of the new incarnation of V in the fall.

Not only is the 56 year old actress returning as Diana, but we also learn that she will be Anna's (Morena Baccarin) own mother! Apparently, this Diana is a new incarnation of the character, and she will have a recurring role on the series.

When the series return, the viewers will find out that Anna is keeping her mother prisoner in a previously unseen area of the ship designed to look like the aliens' home planet.

It seems it was both Morena Baccarin and Laura Vandervoot's (who plays Lisa, Anna's daughter) hope to have Jane Badler play Diana.

'Torchwood' Series 4 Writers Revealed and I'm Impressed!

The Chicago Tribune has a story on Torchwood Series 4 and it reveals the names of four other writers that will join Russel T Davies in penning the 10-part series that will begin filming early in 2011, and will air the following summer on Starz.

Along with Russel T Davies, who will pen several of the episodes as befit the showrunner, the new writers are:

John Shiban (Breaking Bad, Supernatural, The X-Files)

Doris Egan (House, Tru Calling, Dark Angel)

Jane Espenson (Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy)

John Fay (UK Torchwood)

Apparently, the writers are now hard at work writing the scripts for the upcoming new season. The story will tell an international tale in a serialized, overarching storyline in ten episodes, as in the format of Torchwood: Children of Earth.

The names on the list are clearly impressive, especially - well to me at least - Jane Espenson. Though they are mostly American writers, I am certain that they will keep the subtle (or not so subtle) British humour and story style that I admire from, well, British series, so that Torchwood will still feel like the same show. I'm also quite certain that Davies will put his mark on the scripts.

Torchwood Series 4 will see the return of John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper. Casting is on the way for the many new characters that will appear on the series.
